Recommended Reading

Before Lydia was born, one of my student's mothers gave me a book on mothering. I didn't get a chance to read it before she came and it was many months later before I picked it up to give it a closer look. That book is A Mother's Heart by Jean Fleming. I highly recommend it to anyone who is or would like to be a mother. Sometimes I feel like these types of books written by Christian women portray this impossibly perfect picture of the saintly woman and mother who has the perfect smoothly managed Christian home. She never has to raise her voice, she rarely gets discouraged, she homeschool her children, she probably has her own garden, bakes bread daily and sews all of the family clothes. (Ok, maybe I'm getting carried away!) I don't mean that this isn't something to be esteemed or to strive for, but sometimes I think, "Come on! Where does real life with all of the struggles and challenges fit in in this example?"
A Mother's Heart is truly encouraging, practical and insightful. When I finished it I felt in some ways as if I should just go back to the beginning and read it again!

Do you mind if I borrow said book? And have you started reading those vaccine books?

Have not started on the vaccine books (do you need them back soon?) and E. Strevel is reading my book right now.

No I don't need them back anytime soon..Judging from the last visit to my pediatrician, I don't need to talk when she is arguing with me about how important they are. She doesn't let me get a word in edgewise. I was merely curious if you had any thoughts on what you read...take your time. She can't have that book! She is already the perfect wife and mother. She has had WAY more practice than me... =)

Amy or Jen,

I'm curious about the vaccine books you two are talking about. Can you tell me the authors and titles?

They are: "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Vaccines" by Stephanie Cave and "The Vaccine Guide: Risks and Benefits for Children and Adults" by Randall Neustaedter.
They both give info on all the different shots that are "offered" and the history of vaccines in general. I found them both to be very informative, and I was very thankful to have something to say to the pediatrician, even if she didn't let me talk. Also, if you're going to read them, I suggest you DO read both. I think they compliment each other very well. I don't genreally like to just take a doctor's word for it, so I was very thankful to feel well-informed when she started the "your child will die if you don't" speech.

Jen,
You are doing such a bang-up job with Lydia! Maybe you should write the real story on how to raise children,
love,
Kathy

They didn't say that at all. My pediatrician fussed and fussed, but simply told me to remind her if I ever brought Emma in when she was sick. It would make a difference in how she treated her. But nothing was said about not covering her thankfully.
